Mapping the Undocumented Levees

This project presents a novel method for detecting and mapping levees and levee-like features on floodplains using high-resolution LiDAR data and deep learning techniques. Research indicates that many such features are missing from the National Levee Database, leaving their presence and characteristics undocumented. While these structures may not be officially recognized as flood mitigation infrastructure, they often function as hydrological barriers. By identifying and tracing them, this work contributes to a better understanding of their influence on flood dynamics and highlights opportunities for wetland restoration and landscape development.
